Favorite Drugstore Skincare Over 50
Today we’re going to be talking all about drugstore skincare. I have so many great products to share with you. Drugstore skincare has been an absolute foundation on my anti-aging skincare routine.
When I first launched on this journey which was a little more than a year and a half ago, one of the criteria I put for myself is that everything had to be affordable and accessible to almost everyone. Everything had to be at home products, devices, or procedures. I am absolutely stunned by the progress I’ve made with my skin in the time since I’ve started my skincare journey.
Let’s hop right into the drugstore skincare!
After testing and trying a whole boatload of cleansing oils, my favorite has been the Palmers Cleansing Oil.
I started using this cleansing oil about a year ago. The first time I used it, I really didn’t like it because it has a very distinctive smell. I learned over time that it’s a great cleansing oil. It is the first step in a two-step cleansing in the evenings when you want to take your makeup off. With the cleansing oil and wash it with a facial cleanser afterward. I like how the Palmers took off my makeup; it’s almost like it melted away.
It’s a lovely formula, it feels great on the skin, and I found out over time I got hooked on the smell. It almost smells organic or fresh, maybe like a fresh alfalfa something along that line. I’ve tried quite a few cleansing oils this past year, and I haven’t found one that I like better than the Palmers Cleansing Oil.
If you’re looking for a great cleansing oil for the first step in your double cleanse in the evening, my favorite hands-down is the Palmer cleansing oil.
I absolutely love the Neutrogena Skin Balancing Milky Cleanser. Not only does it clean my face well without leaving it dry, but it has just the most wonderful, almost peppermint scent. It feels very luxurious, it feels very high-end, and I really enjoy using it.
The Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser is popular with older, more mature women because it cleanses very gently and doesn’t dry out your skin at all.
I use both of these cleansers, and I love them. If I had to pick one of them as a favorite, I would pick the Neutrogena Skin Balancing Milky Cleanser just because it feels more luxurious or spa-like. They’re both excellent cleansers for the second step of your double cleanse. Both drugstore prices, both easily available.
One of the products I regularly use in my skincare routine is The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% with HA.
I use this for the blackhead areas of my skin. When I was younger, I had very oily skin and would get a lot of blackheads on my nose and my chin. Now that I’m older, my skin is more normal, meaning it’s not super oily, not super dry.
I use Lactic Acid to keep those areas cleaner and keep those blackhead areas from looking dark. I put a tiny drop in the palm of my hand, put it on my fingers, then pat it all over my nose and down on my chin. Then, any extra just goes over the rest of my face. This is an extremely affordable formulation, so if you have that issue of blackheads are hanging around, this might be a good choice for you.
In addition, this is a great exfoliator. It’s very, very gentle, so if you want to use it all over your face daily, it’s an excellent way to keep your skin looking a little bit brighter and a little bit fresher.
One of my absolute favorite products from The Ordinary is the AHA BHA Peeling Solution. This is a very effective exfoliator peel for your skin. Now when I say peel, it doesn’t mean that things are actually going to peel off. It exfoliates your skin so you can get off all those dead skin cells, and the newer, brighter skin can come through.
I recommend this to anyone who is launching an anti-aging skincare routine. Just start with washing their face and use this peel, a moisturizer, and sunscreen for 4 to 6 weeks because when we begin a new anti-aging skincare routine, the first thing we need to do is get off all the old dead skin. I wish I would have known at the beginning of my anti-aging skincare routine. When I first started, I went out and bought a bunch of products and slathered them on my face. I probably wasted a lot of time and money doing that because I had so much dead skin build up on my face, so all those products probably weren’t getting into my skin.
If you’re just launching on an anti-aging skincare routine and you want your skin to look a little bit fresher and brighter before you start adding other products, I highly recommend using The Ordinary AHA BHA Peeling Solution.
If you have an established regular skincare routine, I recommend using this about once a week, which is what I do. I put some all over my face, leave it after about 7 to 10 minutes, wash my face, and then I just put on a very gentle moisturizer. I don’t use anything else, just this and moisturizer to let my skin rest overnight.
The Ordinary AHA BHA Peeling Solution is one of the foundational staples of my skincare routine.
As we get a little more mature, our skin can get a little rougher and drier, particularly around the elbows, the knees, around the feet, and who knows what else.
Using a lotion with exfoliating properties can help keep my skin a lot softer and a lot more pretty. One of the products that I love is the AHA 12% Relax Day Lotion, this is a K-Beauty product, and I stumbled upon it about four months ago, and oh my gosh – this is so good! I’ll tell you this is not for delicate skin; you can really feel it when it goes on.
It is a very liquidy formula; it’s very hydrating and has a very high AHA percentage, which exfoliates your skin. I use this on the areas of my body that I feel need special attention, particularly my upper arms, my elbows, my décolleté because I want to keep that skin fresh and turning over. I feel it when I put it on as it tingles a little bit. If you have super sensitive skin, this might not be a good fit for you. If you do have drier and rougher areas, I can say that this is a great product.
